The UIL just announced its 2008-10 reclassification and realignment information, and there were some pretty decent surprises. Check them out for yourselves here.
There were some big news for our Humble-area schools and New Caney, but for the rest of our coverage-area schools, things looked more or less the same.
Jonathan spent the morning side-by-side with our local coaches and managed to land most of our schools’ pre-district football schedules – see the post above for those.

The Westfield Mustangs doubled up on the Spring Lions tonight, as the girls rolled to a 67-38 win at home, while the guys survived a slow start to take a 67-63 win at Spring thanks to a 28 point fourth quarter.
For the guys, guard Mark Brooks and big man Mike Brown shined. The duo combined for 40 of the teams 67 points, each kicking in 20 a piece.
Over at Westfield, I saw one of the best prep girls basketball teams I have ever seen in person as the Lady Mustangs dazzled the crowd and played exceptional in all phases of the game.
What amazed about this team was the way they moved the ball. Each player on the court seemed to know where each other were and gave Spring’s defense fits all night.
Guard Gevenia Carter was simply phenomenal. Carter lead the team with 22 points on the night, using a nasty crossover and some spectacular handles to free herself of the defense and open things up for her team in addition to connecting twice from beyond the arc.
Can’t wait to see this team in the playoffs!

What a day. Countless scores to tell you about, and still plenty more action to come tomorrow.
The biggest news came in Kingwood tonight, where Humble knocked off the Mustangs 35-32 despite playing the game without senior guard Dwayne Rogers. In his absence, backcourt mate Vincent Cavalier stepped up as the unquestioned star of the game. Cavalier scored 12 points, spent most of the game dribbling away the clock, hit the go-ahead free throw with 15.2 seconds remaining, and knocked away a steal that clinched the game soon after. He did all this despite missing two crucial minutes of the fourth quarter due to cramps. Quite a performance.
Humble opened up a 14-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to terrific defense, including two steals and two blocks from big man Terry Hines, who also hit a 3-pointer. Denying Kingwood entry passes to Jordan McGowen (14 points) was key for Humble all night. After the first quarter, Humble spent most of its energy killing the clock and trying to make Kingwood chase the ball. Darius Tubbs had a big game, joining McGowen and Cavalier as the only players to score in each quarter.
In the final quarter, Kingwood made its charge with Cavalier out of the game and tied the game after a clutch 3-pointer from Derek McLea and a pair of Tevin Svihovec free throws with 26.2 seconds left. But Svihovec fouled Cavalier before the ball was even inbounded, and Cavalier’s late heroics followed to lift Humble to a 5-0 district record. Quite a win, witnessed by a loud, involved crowd that packed the gym 20 minutes before tip-off.

Both Spring and Westfield were in action today at the 68th Annual Houston ISD Jaycees Tournament after being sent to the consolation bracket due to first-round losses Thursday.
Spring began the day against Houston Furr but was unable to advance, dropping the game 37-33. The Lions will play their final match-up of the tourney tomorrow at Reagan High School (13th & Arlington, Houston TX) at 10:30 a.m. against Waco University.
Westfield began its day with a win over Houston Scarborough, advancing to the consolation quarterfinal to take on Houston Westside. In that game, the Mustangs ran away with a 92-67 win.
Westfield simply overwhelmed Westside in all phases of the game, storming to a 14-point halftime lead with a 27-point second quarter. Mike Brown and Mark Brooks led the way for Mustang scorers with 22 and 19 points, respectively. 18 of Brown’s points came in the first half alone (including a couple of spectacular dunks).
Westfield will play in the consolation semifinal Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Delmar Fieldhouse (2020 Mangum, Houston, TX) and can play for the consolation championship at 5 p.m. at Delmar with a win.

Kingwood, K-Park take girls cross country state titles! 10 November 2007Posted by Observer Sports in Game recaps, Kingwood, Kingwood Park, Splendora, Spring, Updates, Westfield.

The Kingwood and Kingwood Park girls cross country teams BOTH won state titles today in Round Rock. I’m so excited for both of them. I talked to both coaches and runners from both teams by phone today, since we couldn’t make it to Round Rock on a production day, and it just sounds like an awesome day.
“Awesome” and “exciting” were definitely the most common adjective from both teams, but Kingwood had another: “nerve-racking.” Kingwood and Southlake Carroll tied with 74 points apiece, but Kingwood won the tiebreaker (the place of each team’s sixth runner) by five seconds thanks to Hailey Nicholls in that No. 6 spot. What a dramatic, nail-biting finish. It is the Lady Mustangs’ seventh state title and fourth in the last seven years but first since 2004. Kristen Hanselka finished second in the entire state, the highest finish by a Kingwood girl since 2001.
Kingwood Park fairly breezed to the 3A championship, especially in comparison to Kingwood’s dramatic finish. The Lady Panthers dominated with 56 points, well ahead of second-place Cameron Yoe with 82. Bree Schrader, who won the District 22-3A and Region III-3A meets, placed 10th individually to lead the way, but the Lady Panthers had a terrific gap of only 15 seconds between their No. 2 and No. 5 runners. What a day for Kingwood cross country! Hard not to gush about this one.
The area’s other representatives at the meet all fared well. Spring Westfield’s Brintney Green placed third overall in the 5A girls race, just .05 behind Hanselka. Faith Sanders, from Spring, placed 14th. In the 3A meet, Splendora’s Jennifer Secrest placed 34th.

Splendora won its second consecutive District 22-3A title tonight at Wildcat Stadium, holding off Coldspring 22-15 for a third consecutive victory by one touchdown or less. The Wildcats will enter the UIL Region III-3A Division I playoffs with a bi-district game tentatively slated for 1 p.m. next Saturday (Nov. 17) at Turner Stadium in Humble. I’m happy about the Splendora win, but I’m even happier that I’ll get to see that playoff game on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Kingwood lost in triple overtime against Baytown Sterling in a stunner, and Atascocita had a Senior Night to forget, losing to Lee at home. Westfield beat Spring 31-14, scoring twice on punt returns, and will face The Woodlands Friday night Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Klein Memorial Stadium. New Caney was respectable in its loss to Crosby. More to come tomorrow; I’m tired.
Oh, by the way, Kingwood can still make the playoffs if Humble beats P.A. Memorial. Think Dougald McDougald is calling Walt Beasley and asking him to play Keith Baker?
