Some things never change. Even though I haven’t been covering this area’s sports for that long, it’s long enough to learn about Splendora softball. They dominate, and things didn’t change tonight. I really appreciate how they carry themselves, always striving for more, always looking to improve. Most likely, they’ll keep it up, and then we’ll see what they’re made of as they try for a state championship. (more…)

UIL announces new alignment 1 February 2008

The UIL just announced its 2008-10 reclassification and realignment information, and there were some pretty decent surprises. Check them out for yourselves here.

There were some big news for our Humble-area schools and New Caney, but for the rest of our coverage-area schools, things looked more or less the same.

Jonathan spent the morning side-by-side with our local coaches and managed to land most of our schools’ pre-district football schedules – see the post above for those.

cold, wintry Friday night 25 January 2008

The winter weather certainly hasn’t kept our local teams down. At Humble High School tonight, the Humble girls basketball team pulled out a nailbiting 45-44 win over Baytown Sterling to improve to 8-3 in District 21-5A play with three games remaining. Humble remains in a tie for first place with either one or two other teams.

I snuck over to Turner Stadium before the basketball game and at halftime and was lucky enough to see the first goal in the Kingwood Park girls soccer team’s 3-0 win over Huntsville. It was a pretty combination from Brooke Harper to Kacie Black that set the tone, and the Lady Panthers put their second consecutive District 19-4A win away with a pair of second-half goals fromĀ Harper.

New Caney lost a couple games tonight … Smiley beat the Eagles in boys basketball, 95-61, and Waller beat New Caney in girls soccer, 3-2.

I just got off the phone with Splendora boys basketball head coach Jason Vela, and was he ever excited after the Wildcats’ 30-23 win over Tarkington. I know, I know, a 30-23 win doesn’t sound that exciting, but this keeps Splendora in the thick of the playoff race, battling with Kingwood Park for the No. 3 spot in District 22-3A. Splendora got a big game from junior Bryan Wade, who made his first varsity start and dropped in a team-high 12 points while holding Ryan Brewer, Tarkington’s leading scorer, to seven points.

I’m on a quick vacation at my home in New Jersey, but I’m making time to get in a few quick score updates, mostly from district action for our 3A and 4A teams.

Boys
Kingwood Park 68, Shepherd 37 – Quillian (KPrk) 20; Croy (KPrk) 14 – winning start in first district game for K-Park.
Tarkington 42, Splendora 29 – Usher (Splndr) 11 – disappointing start for Splendora.
Smiley 85, New Caney 57 – Boyd (NC) 24; Fernandez (NC) 12 – tough opponent, but I know New Caney expected to keep it closer.

Girls
Kingwood Park 49, Shepherd 29 – Brown (KPrk) 21 – that’s 3-0 for the Lady Panthers, but the toughest games lie ahead.
Tarkington 48, Splendora 45 – Jones (Splndr) 11; McClure (Splndr) 10 – tough one drops Ladycats to 1-2.
New Caney 72, Smiley 28 – Strother (NC) 20; Thomas (NC) 15 – Yikes. Almost makes up for the boys game.
Kingwood 54, Kountze 50 – Towers (Kwd) 15; Raught (Kwd) 13 – Tidy non-district win for the Lady Mustangs.

Remarkably, as I begin my second basketball season with the Observer, I had yet to see the Kingwood boys play until tonight. I probably wouldn’t have gone tonight, either, with an average district game on tap, but with most of our other teams out of town, I headed down Kingwood Drive to check them out, and I’m glad I did.

I saw a terrific performance from senior Jordan McGowen save a serious upset bid by Baytown Sterling, which led 35-34 after three quarters. Hunter Martin and Adam Brown each had 8 points, Nick James and Tevin Svihovec scored five apiece, and Rob Singletary had two points. Fore more details, you can read the online recap.

Friday night scoreboard

Boys
Kingwood 55, Baytown Sterling 46 – McGowen (Kwd) 27.
Humble 55, P.A. Memorial 48 – I’m pumped about this one.
Atascocita 59, Baytown Lee 33 – Great start for Humble ISD schools.
Huffman Hargrave 54, Kingwood Park 45.
Big Sandy 70, Splendora 59.
Westfield 63, Conroe Oak Ridge 53.

Girls
New Caney 55, Crosby 46.
The Woodlands 66, Kingwood Park 47.
Magnolia 51, Splendora 22.

Atascocita boys roll to 67-37 blowout 27 November 2007

The Atascocita boys basketball team breezed to a 67-37 win over Pasadena Dobie tonight in a game that wasn’t even as close as the score indicated. Here’s the online recap. (And theĀ online recap from the Kingwood game.)

The Eagles put on a little dunking exhibition before the game, although they tried enough fancy stuff to knock their percentage below 50 percent. They played just as loose once the game started, dominating a team that had a height advantage inside.

I’ll write more on this later, but freshmen Jamal Branch and Everett Pleasant are the real deal. Most of you already knew that, but I’m a little slow on the uptake sometimes. Branch had 13 and Pleasant had 9 in this game. Shawn Toran, who had 30 points the other day, also scored 9 . Mick Hoffman had 10, Austin Nickell 8, and junior guard Matt Evans contributed with 8 points, all in the third quarter.

I also got to speak with Atascocita teacher and counselor Cynthia Colbert, the wife of head football coach and athletic coordinator Dean Colbert, and that was a blast. She filled me in on a few upcoming college commitments from Atascocita athletes, and it’s quite a first senior class of athletes that the school has produced.

She promises Atascocita will make the playoffs in boys basketball, so here’s hoping she’s right on the money again.
