Lady Eagles end their season 18 April 2008Posted by ccolunga in New Caney, Updates.

The New Caney softball team had an emotional night. It was the last home game, senior night and an extremely crucial win for the Lady Eagles. One they couldn’t pull off. The sad thing was they lost in the first inning on rookie mistakes. They walk away, though, hopeful for next year, because next year they begin fresh. New district, new class. Only time will tell if the Lady Eagles are ready for the big 5A. (more…)

The Eagles escaped with a vital 3-2 win Tuesday night versus Crosby.
Since New Caney has improved tremendously since the start of the season, I was expecting a crisp game. The Eagles left much to be desired baseball wise, but played with a lot of guts to come up with such an important win. If they are able to put the two together, a legitimate playoff team may be the product.

The UIL just announced its 2008-10 reclassification and realignment information, and there were some pretty decent surprises. Check them out for yourselves here.
There were some big news for our Humble-area schools and New Caney, but for the rest of our coverage-area schools, things looked more or less the same.
Jonathan spent the morning side-by-side with our local coaches and managed to land most of our schools’ pre-district football schedules – see the post above for those.
not quite super Tuesday 29 January 2008Posted by Observer Sports in Game recaps, Kingwood Park, New Caney, Updates.

I’ve got the Kingwood Park-New Caney hook-up on this Tuesday night leading up to Super Sunday.
In the first game I saw, the Kingwood Park girls basketball team clinched a playoff spot in its first year of varsity play with a 58-32 win over Tarkington that was not quite as easy as the score indicated. The Lady Panthers were impatient in the first half and only led 22-17 at the break. Head coach Angela Gober was very encouraged by the dominant second-half performance, as Kingwood Park scored almost as many points in the third quarter (19) as it did in the first half (22) on its way to outscoring Tarkington 36-15 in the second half.
Larla Brown scored 27 points on the night, but one of the keys for Kingwood Park was a 15-point effort from guard Aly DioGuardi. All eight Lady Panthers, including JV call-up Jessica Hedges, scored. Kingwood Park faces third-place Coldspring on Friday and hosts first-place Cleveland next Tuesday in a huge game.
I moved over to the second half of the boys soccer game between Kingwood Park and New Caney, where the Panthers improved to 3-1 in District 19-4A play with a 4-2 win behind two goals from Juan Castillo (pictured). New Caney had the wind in the first half and took an early lead through sophomore Paul Olascoaga, but Kingwood Park answered back to lead 2-1 at the half.
The Panthers went ahead 3-1 early in the second half with their second goal from a corner kick, as stopper Kyle Trimm got forward to head in a Cody Lofgren cross. New Caney got back to within a goal in the 50th minute when a deflected free kick fell to Franco Olascoaga, who finished into an empty net to make it 3-2. New Caney goalkeeper Luis Ramirez, just a sophomore, made some sparkling second-half saves but failed to control a through ball in the 56th minute, and Castillo tapped into an empty net for his second goal of the game. K-Park held on from there for the win.
Over at Don Ford Stadium, I got some good reporting help that the Kingwood Park girls soccer team (aided by Kristi Murphy and Hannah Clegg after their basketball game ended) beat New Caney 3-1. Brooke Harper led the way by scoring from a free kick and setting up Jamie Luis for the other two goals. Goalkeeper Andrea Ivey and the K-Park defense held firm, although New Caney did grab a late goal from Cassie Nelson.
Back to boys basketball; Kingwood Park wrapped up a 45-32 win over Tarkington to keep the Panthers moving toward third place, with Splendora close behind. Jordan Quillian led the way with 19 points.
The New Caney girls basketball team could not come through against second-place Barbers Hill, falling 64-44 to all but kill the Lady Eagles’ playoff hopes.

The winter weather certainly hasn’t kept our local teams down. At Humble High School tonight, the Humble girls basketball team pulled out a nailbiting 45-44 win over Baytown Sterling to improve to 8-3 in District 21-5A play with three games remaining. Humble remains in a tie for first place with either one or two other teams.
I snuck over to Turner Stadium before the basketball game and at halftime and was lucky enough to see the first goal in the Kingwood Park girls soccer team’s 3-0 win over Huntsville. It was a pretty combination from Brooke Harper to Kacie Black that set the tone, and the Lady Panthers put their second consecutive District 19-4A win away with a pair of second-half goals from Harper.
New Caney lost a couple games tonight … Smiley beat the Eagles in boys basketball, 95-61, and Waller beat New Caney in girls soccer, 3-2.
I just got off the phone with Splendora boys basketball head coach Jason Vela, and was he ever excited after the Wildcats’ 30-23 win over Tarkington. I know, I know, a 30-23 win doesn’t sound that exciting, but this keeps Splendora in the thick of the playoff race, battling with Kingwood Park for the No. 3 spot in District 22-3A. Splendora got a big game from junior Bryan Wade, who made his first varsity start and dropped in a team-high 12 points while holding Ryan Brewer, Tarkington’s leading scorer, to seven points.

There’s going to be plenty of action, both in soccer and basketball, on this Tuesday night, so check back with the blog for updates and scores from as many games as possible.
As an early update, due to the weather, the Kingwood Park boys soccer game against Brenham has been moved to a 6 p.m. kickoff at Turner Stadium.
Brenham 2, Kingwood Park 1 – K-Park played a terrific game for a first-year program and, playing a 4-5-1, carried play in the first half. Brenham scored on a counterattack in the 27th minute, however, and added a goal just after halftime. Kingwood Park rallied with a goal from Lance Draper in the 54th minute but never seriously threatened to tie it. Brenham, one of the state’s top-ranked 4A squads, escaped with the 2-1 win, but Kingwood Park can now expect to be a force in District 19-4A.
Huntsville 3, New Caney 2 – Disappointing start for the Eagle boys despite goals by Matt Davis and Daniel Torres and two assists from Paul Olascoaga.
Katy Taylor 7, Humble 1
Westfield 2, Jersey Village 0
Brenham 5, Kingwood Park 0
New Caney 3, Huntsville 2 – Junior Tannia Bonilla had two goals and an assist, Maria Luna scored once, and defenders Danielle Burke and Lauren Eagan helped make it stand up as the Lady Eagles began District 19-4A play with a win. With a 3-1 lead, New Caney’s Shanita Johnson saved a penalty kick, but Huntsville scored on the rebound to get to within one goal.
Humble 43, Baytown Lee 34 – Terry Hines scoredd 11 points and Dwayne Rogers had 10 in Humble’s win, as the Wildcats avoided a letdown following its big win over Kingwood. John Walker had a solid fourth quarter and finished with 7 points.

What a day. Countless scores to tell you about, and still plenty more action to come tomorrow.
The biggest news came in Kingwood tonight, where Humble knocked off the Mustangs 35-32 despite playing the game without senior guard Dwayne Rogers. In his absence, backcourt mate Vincent Cavalier stepped up as the unquestioned star of the game. Cavalier scored 12 points, spent most of the game dribbling away the clock, hit the go-ahead free throw with 15.2 seconds remaining, and knocked away a steal that clinched the game soon after. He did all this despite missing two crucial minutes of the fourth quarter due to cramps. Quite a performance.
Humble opened up a 14-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to terrific defense, including two steals and two blocks from big man Terry Hines, who also hit a 3-pointer. Denying Kingwood entry passes to Jordan McGowen (14 points) was key for Humble all night. After the first quarter, Humble spent most of its energy killing the clock and trying to make Kingwood chase the ball. Darius Tubbs had a big game, joining McGowen and Cavalier as the only players to score in each quarter.
In the final quarter, Kingwood made its charge with Cavalier out of the game and tied the game after a clutch 3-pointer from Derek McLea and a pair of Tevin Svihovec free throws with 26.2 seconds left. But Svihovec fouled Cavalier before the ball was even inbounded, and Cavalier’s late heroics followed to lift Humble to a 5-0 district record. Quite a win, witnessed by a loud, involved crowd that packed the gym 20 minutes before tip-off.
