The UIL just announced its 2008-10 reclassification and realignment information, and there were some pretty decent surprises. Check them out for yourselves here.

There were some big news for our Humble-area schools and New Caney, but for the rest of our coverage-area schools, things looked more or less the same.

Jonathan spent the morning side-by-side with our local coaches and managed to land most of our schools’ pre-district football schedules – see the post above for those.

Not pretty, but a win 18 December 2007

The Atascocita girls won their first district game of the year Monday night, pulling away with a 16-4 advantage in the fourth quarter for a 53-37 win against an overmatched Baytown Lee squad. Nadia Taylor scored a season-high 27 points for the Lady Eagles, most of them from about two feet away. Kayla Bogs added 9 points and showed the best outside shooting of the day for Atascocita.

Other than Taylor, however, Atascocita was pretty unimpressive. The Lady Eagles have more depth inside than they did at the beginning of the season, but their passing and free-throw shooting were erratic. To be fair, however, head coach Tricia Gutierrez used all 11 players at her disposal with regular frequency, trying to get everybody on her deep squad some minutes. With a 9-6 record, Atascocita faces Katy Seven Lakes on Friday and will play in the Willis Tournament Dec. 27-29.

The real tests will come in January. Early-season losses to Baytown Sterling and Kingwood, two of its main playoff competitors, have put Atascocita in a hole. The buzzwords around the team, like last year, have been “team chemistry.” With it, the Lady Eagles are competitive; without it, they struggle on the floor. Of course, the games when they lack team chemistry often just happen to coincide with the tougher games. Will the Lady Eagles be able to toughen up in district play? We’ll find out in 2008, with an opening stretch of three games in seven nights against Beaumont West Brook, Port Arthur Memorial and Humble.

Joey went to see the Humble-P.A. Memorial girls game tonight, but the game appeared to be canceled. More on that later. The Kingwood girls, however, moved to 3-0 with a 45-39 win over Baytown Sterling.

On the boys side, Kingwood beat Clear Creek 59-49. Kingwood Park played Spring Dekaney in a JV game, and I’m not sure who won. In the same e-mail, I saw the score as Kingwood Park 51, Spring Dekaney 50 and Dekaney winning 60-51. I believe Dekaney did win, which is interesting to see. Sebastian Douglas and Darius Graves each had 15 points for the new Wildcats, while Jake Powell netted 21 and Kolby Chandler 11 for K-Park, which opens district play Friday night.

Okay, now that I’m in the office on Friday, we can give you a bit of a wrap-up from Thursday and a schedule for tonight, which sees five area football teams in action and seven district volleyball matches.

K-Park, Spring, Dekaney JV action from Thursday 6 September 2007

We had a nice JV football doubleheader at Turner Stadium this afternoon. Although it would have been nice if the scoreboard had been ready to go, several of us enjoyed Spring vs. Kingwood Park Silver and Dekaney vs. Kingwood Park Black.

To make a long story short, Spring (I’m assuming it was the sophomore team) dominated K-Park’s No. 2 squad by a 42-6 margin. In the second game, the Panthers’ A-team made Dekaney’s first game a forgettable one with a 24-8 win.

I am so stunned right now, that I’m just going to post this link and this link and pretty much leave it at that. Our hearts go out to the entire Spring community right now.

Westfield linebacker Herman Mitchell, who was 17 years old, was shot and killed yesterday on his way to the team bus for a scrimmage against Aldine, which was later canceled. Mitchell had given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Oklahoma.

Our company, Houston Community Newspapers, today launched a new high school football Web site at HCNfootball.com.

We already have a Houston-area poll up and running (Westfield debuts at No. 2), and there will be features updated regularly. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, you can expect recaps and pictures from games around the city to be updated regularly.

We at The Observers are pretty excited about this site. When our football previews come out next week, they will be linked to from the site, and we will also be providing some exclusive, Web-only content for HCNfootball.com. So check it out when you get the chance.

Welcome to the Observer‘s sports blog. The Observer Newspapers cover nine high schools in four school districts and other youth sports in our communities, and we strive to provide the best local sports coverage in the Houston area.

We will use this blog to highlight stories in our print editions, but more importantly, we will use this space to give up-to-date reports on games and stories involving our teams. We will provide stories that do not make it into the print edition and update stories we have already run. And, from time to time, Joe and I – and other staff writers – will sound off on whatever issues affect high school and community sports fans in the area.

Most importantly, we want to cover the topics our readers care about, so please e-mail us at observersports [at] hcnonline.com to start the ball rolling.
