The Kingwood girls soccer team took a 1-0 win today over Katy Taylor , making it the second straight year Taylor has fallen to the Lady Mustangs in regional semifinals.

Carmen made it out to the game and will be on here a bit later to tell you amore about the game so check back later this evening.

The girls advance to take on Clear Lake tomorrow at 11:30 at Abshier Stadium in what should be an outstanding match-up. Against Atascocita in the area round, Clear Lake showed some pretty incredible speed and athleticism on their way to a 4-0 victory. In addition, the Lady Falcons took a 2-0 win today over defending Region champs Deer Park today.

We’ll see if Kingwood’s D will have the answer.

In other news in prep sports, the Atascocita vs. Humble softball game was postponed due to rain until tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. The Kingwood baseball team on the other hand, will go ahead with their game against Baytown Lee as scheduled at 6:30.

Tuesday night soccer playoff update 25 March 2008

Tonight, I headed down to Galena Park ISD Stadium to catch the Humble boys in action against District 22-5A champs North Shore.

If it had not been for three North Shore goals in the first 15 minutes, this one might have been much different.

Humble appeared to be a bit gun shy early on, and an experienced and athletic North Shore squad made them pay for some early mistakes. In addition, the absence of senior goal keeper Jose Orozco, who was injured in a club game two weeks ago, clearly hurt the team.

In the second half, Humble made a couple of adjustments and managed to pull the game to within two when Alberto Padilla scored five minutes in off of a strange rebound. The play developed when Michael Rus-Vid penetrated the defense and fired a close range shot in the box that was blocked directly in front of the goal. It appeared that North Shore’s keeper had fallen on and safely secured the ball, but instead the ball squirted out allowing a Padilla to make the heads up play.

North Shore would add another goal to make the final tally 4-1, but the young Wildcats still managed to make some impressive plays. Not too bad for a team with seven freshman on the field, lacking their all district keeper.

For those of you don’t already know, we had a special guest reporter make an appearance at the Atascocita boys game tonight. as our previous fearless sports leader Jonathan Yardley returned to his Observer roots handle some game coverage for us.

You can also check out full coverage from Jonathan, and Carmen’s coverage of the girls game (here).

Here are all the local scores from this week’s playoff action so far:

BOYS – North Shore 4, Humble 1

Atascocita teams win 25 March 2008

Both Atascocita soccer teams wound up breezing to bi-district playoff wins tonight. The Lady Eagles beat La Porte in the opening round for the second straight year, winning 4-0 at Charles Street Stadium.

I was at Atascocita to see the boys team beat Deer Park 6-1. The game was closer than that, but the Eagles really stepped up their play in the final 25 minutes to break open a 2-1 game. I don’t like to give too much credit to one player, and Atascocita has really improved its team play a ton, but the addition of former U-17 national team player Alex Dixon, a senior who also plays for the Houston Dynamo Academy and was only in his fourth game with Atascocita, made a huge difference. We’ll have more details on the game later, but Dixon was on his own level in the second half, and he finished with two goals and an assist. Should give the Eagles a chance against District 24-5A champion Clear Lake on Friday.

A beautiful blast from K-Park forward Juan Castillo in the 28th minute knotted things 1-1 against Waller, but the Bulldogs took control in the second half to take a 3-1 win.  Check out the full recap from new Observer staffer Carmen Colunga (here).

In other soccer action tonight, Atascocita took care of Sterling 3-0, while Kingwood dominated Channelview in the four o’clock game, 9-0.

The Humble boys dropped an important match to Baytown Lee 6-1, while the girls lost a close one to the Lady Ganders at Charles Street 2-1.

The Kingwood girls trampled Channelview 11-0 on the road. Amanda Essay turned in an impressive performance, notching a hat trick on the night, while three others scored two goals a piece.

A Nicole DiSevo goal sealed the win for the K-Park girls against Waller on the road, 1-0.

Spoke to Kingwood boys head coach Royce Huseman this morning and he was able to give me not only Kingwood’s playoff game info, but Humble’s as well. Thanks coach!

Humble and Kingwood are set up for a playoff double-header extravaganza of sorts Tuesday night at Crosby High School.

Humble will get things going at 6 p.m. against 22-5A, 3-seed North Shore, while Kingwood will take on the fourth-seeded Pasadena Dobie Longhorns at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, Atascocita will taking on District 22-5A champs LaPorte at North Shore High School at 7 p.m.

Should be one heck of a night.

Eagles grab final playoff spot 16 February 2008

Well, the Atascocita boys rallied together with their backs against the wall to complete back-to-back play-in wins today by defeating Port Arthur Memorial 41-39 at Baytown Lee.

With the win the Eagles pull down the final playoff spot in District 21-5A, and will take on District 22-5A winner La Porte in the bi-district round. No word on time or location, but I’ll try to get that as soon as possible.

Humble ISD has got to be feeling pretty good right now after completing the 21-5A playoff trifecta.

Hats off to Coach Castles and the whole Eagle basketball team for a job well done.

My oh my, Eagles still alive 15 February 2008

Atascocita came out fired up tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive with a huge 72-59 win over Baytown Sterling tonight. You can check out the full recap on the Atascocita Observer site (here).

The Eagles were led by some unsung heroes and two alley-oop dunks by freshman Everett Pleasant (fed by some brilliant passes that literally faked me out of my lens while I was shooting) only helped fuel Atascocita’s fire.

Seniors Mick Hoffman and Cristian Driver had huge impacts on the game that wont show up in the stats column. Hoffman came out and managed the game masterfully, and helped the Eagles snatch the momentum by serving up the first Pleasant alley-oop and draining a clutch three just before the half. Driver was all over the court on defense and came down with about every crucial defensive rebound in the third quarter to help thwart any chance of a Sterling comeback.

Huge night for Humble ISD basketball teams 12 February 2008

Humble pulled off a dramatic 63-62 overtime win (full recap here) at home over the Bruins tonight, while Kingwood slipped out of Atascocita with a 57-52 win in the final seconds (full recap here). This means we have a tie for first place in District 21-5A between the two schools. Looks like the district has decided to determine the No. 1 seed by way of coin flip.

With the loss to Kingwood, it looked like Atascocita was going to miss the playoffs, but P.A. Memorial did them a favor tonight by losing to Baytown Sterling, leaving a three-way tie for fourth place. This madness will be decided by a three-way playoff Friday and Saturday, with a coin flip to decide seeding.

Things did not go as well for the Kingwood girls, as the Lady Mustangs ended up losing a heart breaker to Pasadena Dobie 40-37 in OT.
