Three Observer teams began their quest for state tournament tonight as Atascocita opened in dominant fashion while Splendora and Kingwood will be searching for more in their upcoming games.

Atascocita opened bi-district action against District 22-5A third-seed North Shore tonight, breezing past the Mustangs 10-0 when Clay Shrader’s three-run inside the park home run wrapped up things early in the fifth inning.

Carrying a 4-0 lead into the fourth, Grant Clyde hammered a 3-run shot to left center that put the game out of reach.

Over in Pasadena, Kingwood’s Geoff Perrott got the Mustangs off to a hot start with a solo home run in the top of the first before Pasadena Memorial scored 11-unanswered runs in the first three innings, including six runs in the second.

Head coach Kelly Mead is hoping the team can have a better approach at the plate tomorrow as the Mustangs fight to stay alive.

In softball action, Splendora pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory over Giddings in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore catcher Shelby Ruderman drove in the winning run with an RBI single.

Head coach Val Weldon said she expected a scrappy performance from Giddings tonight and praised the play of her senior infielders.
