The Atascocita softball team suffered a tough 5-1 loss tonight to the district leading Baytown Sterling Rangers tonight at home.
Despite the four run defecit, the Lady Eagles kept the pressure on until the very end.
Overall, the Lady Eagles played a solid game against a strong team and were just a few plays away from challening for the win.
Atascocita will take on Kingwood in their final home appearance next Tuesday before heading to Baytown to take on Lee in the final regular season game of the season. Both will be crucial to the Lady Eagles playoff hopes.
Sterling jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but neither team could muster much offense early.
In the top fourth, the Lady Eagles gave up another run, but managed to stiffle a string of Sterling hits by taking advantage of some poor baserunning by Sterling.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nadia Taylor got things going for the Lady Eagles offense with a lead off single, helping the Lady Eagles to load the bases. Kori Ward drove in the only Atascocita run of the night with a blooper over third base, but Laura Schauman was thrown out at home trying to tie the score.
Sterling added to its lead in the top of the fifth by driving in two more runs to widen the margain to 4-1 before adding another run in the top of seventh.
In the bottom the seventh, the Lady Eagles got off to a nice start with three straight base hits. Ward got things started before left fielder Ariel Brayer added a single to give the Lady Eagles runners on first and second with only one out.
Stephanie Regan came through with the Lady Eagles third straight hit, but Atascocita was once again caught at the plate when Ward was sent home from second.
Pitcher Alyssa Romero did a great job to keep the next at bat alive, but eventually grounded out for the final play of the game.
