Both the Kingwood softball and baseball teams suffered heartbreaking 1-run losses tonight as the Mustangs’ baseball team fell to District 16-5A front runners Baytown Sterling 7-6 in nine innings after overcoming a six-run deficit (recap).

In what turned out to be a defensive, pitchers battle between the Lady Mustangs and Pasadena Dobie, Kingwood fell 1-0 in the bi-district round.

Dobie drove in the games only run in the fourth inning and never looked back, despite Kingwood coming up with one more hit than their District 22-5A opponents.

The New Caney softball team had an emotional night. It was the last home game, senior night and an extremely crucial win for the Lady Eagles. One they couldn’t pull off. The sad thing was they lost in the first inning on rookie mistakes. They walk away, though, hopeful for next year, because next year they begin fresh. New district, new class. Only time will tell if the Lady Eagles are ready for the big 5A. (more…)

Eagles’ win streak ends at 24 18 April 2008

Just got back from watching the showdown for the District 21-5A lead between Atascocita and Baytown Sterling and wow, what a game.

Sterling pitcher Hunter Cervenka was simply dominant as the Rangers ended the Eagles 24-game win streak, 4-1 (recap).

Atascocita starter Clay Schrader pitched a solid game, striking out 13 and giving up only two runs before being relieved with two remaining outs in the top of the seventh.

Schrader gave the Eagles a chance, but the team struggled to get runners on base.

It’s hard to blame the Eagles’ offense tonight as Cervenka was simply on his game. The performance was like no other high school pitcher I have ever seen.

Cervenka had 17 strike outs after the first inning and also drove in the first Sterling run with a lead off homer to begin the fourth.

The Eagles will face another tough one next Tuesday against Kingwood at home.

It was a big night for our local baseball and softball teams with most teams still locked in the thick of the playoff scramble.

Hats off to New Caney head baseball coach Donnie Randell and the Eagle baseball team as the team powered past C.E. King 9-4 tonight to give Randell his 400th coaching win.

In the Humble ISD, Kingwood traveled to Atascocita for an emotional senior night for the Lady Eagles as the team honored its first soon-to-be graduating class.

Kingwood managed to hold on for a 5-4 win and retain second place in District 21-5A, with both teams flashing their bats early. Atascocita pitcher Alyssa Romero tied the game at one in the bottom of the first by blasting a home run over the left center fence that sent the Atascocita bench and fans wild. Kingwood’s Jennifer Bergeron answered right back in the top of the second with a home run of her own, putting the Lady Mustangs up 2-1. Kingwood never looked back after that.

Over in Spring, the Lady Lions pounded Klein 8-0 to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Tomball last Friday. Pitcher Marissa Salinas picked up the win while the Lady Lion offense cranked out hit after hit.

The Atascocita softball team suffered a tough 5-1 loss tonight to the district leading Baytown Sterling Rangers tonight at home.

Despite the four run defecit, the Lady Eagles kept the pressure on until the very end.

Overall, the Lady Eagles played a solid game against a strong team and were just a few plays away from challening for the win.

Atascocita will take on Kingwood in their final home appearance next Tuesday before heading to Baytown to take on Lee in the final regular season game of the season. Both will be crucial to the Lady Eagles playoff hopes.

The Kingwood girls met their match Saturday afternoon. The times I’ve seen the Lady Mustangs play, they dominate thier oppenent, leaving little room to allow any team to shine like they do. Therefore, I often wondered what it would look like for Kingwood to get a taste of thier own medicine. Clear Lake had the same athleticism and aggression the Lady Mustangs have shown all year. It got the best of Kingwood as they fell to the Lady Falcons in the Region III Championship 2-1. (more…)

Kingwood boys, girls fall in region finals 5 April 2008

It was a tough day for both the boys and girls Kingwood soccer teams as the girls fell 2-1 to Clear Lake earlier in the day while the boys lost to Cinco Ranch 3-2 in the afternoon.

In the boys game, Cinco Ranch jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Mustangs showed some incredible effort by battling back even after a late overtime win the night before when Pat McLean scored right out of the gate in the second half to close the game to one.

Cinco answered back quickly to extend their lead to 3-1, but once again Kingwood battled back when McLean scored his second of the day with under three minutes to play to make the score 3-2. The Mustangs mustered one final chance to score, but forward Cale Haas’ shot missed just inches high of the Cinco Ranch goal with under a minute to go.

Another great season for both teams, and hats off to the boys team for playing such a hard fought game only hours after a long and physical battle the night before.

Carmen will be on later to give us some more info on the girls game.

Kingwood pulls out thriller over Strake 5 April 2008

The Kingwood boys pulled out an outstanding 3-2 overtime win tonight against a strong and aggressive Strake Jesuit team who threw everything they had at the Mustangs.

Blake Shannon scored the game winnner on a phenomenal cross from forward Luis Castillo in the fifth minute of the first overtime period, but it was far from the game’s only fireworks.

What made the win even more impressive for the Mustangs was the fact they got the win despite playing a man down for not only overtime, but a decent chunk of the second half as well

Cale Haas got things started for the Mustangs early, hitting an outstanding shot that slipped past the Strake keeper Jorge Ibarra on a roller just to the inside of the right post in the 22nd minute.

Strake answered back quickly, tying the game in the 28th minute, to take back some the momentum Kingwood grabbed after the early dagger.

The Mustangs managed four more shots on goal in the remainder of the first half, but were unable to connect.

In the second half, the game turned from aggressive to physical and down right ugly at times, as practically no penalties were called in the first 60 minutes.

Haas connected with his second goal of the night in the 58th minute, but once again, Strake found their way back into it in the 65th after a loose ball hung in front of the Kingwood goal just a second too long.

Minutes after the goal, a Kingwood player was sent to the sidelines with a red card after stepping on a Strake defender after a small scuffle.

Kingwood made a seamless transition into playing with a man down, and played phenomenal defense for the remainder of the game to prevent any further Strake scoring.
