Eagles’ magical run comes to an end 23 February 2008

After three straight wins, including this past Tuesday’s upset over La Porte, Atascocita fell tonight to a powerful and athletic Fort Bend Hightower team, 69-56, at Clear Lake High School.

Over at Humble, the fields were buzzing as the boys soccer team took on Port Arthur Memorial next door to the baseball team’s showdown with Pasadena Sam Rayburn.

On the diamond, Humble jumped out to a hot start before Sam Rayburn exploded for a five-run fifth inning to tie the score before adding insurance runs in the final two innings to take a 8-6 win.

Kingwood downed by Dulles 21 February 2008

The Kingwood Mustangs struggled to find their offensive rythym tonight, falling in the area round to the Fort Bend Dulles Vikings 49-45. Trailing Dulles for the vast majority of the game, the Mustangs were only able to close the gap to three points in the final quarter before Dulles pulled out a little breathing room with some staunch defense in the final two minutes. You can check out the full recap (here).

Spoke to Kingwood boys head coach Royce Huseman this morning and he was able to give me not only Kingwood’s playoff game info, but Humble’s as well. Thanks coach!

Humble and Kingwood are set up for a playoff double-header extravaganza of sorts Tuesday night at Crosby High School.

Humble will get things going at 6 p.m. against 22-5A, 3-seed North Shore, while Kingwood will take on the fourth-seeded Pasadena Dobie Longhorns at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, Atascocita will taking on District 22-5A champs LaPorte at North Shore High School at 7 p.m.

Should be one heck of a night.

Eagles grab final playoff spot 16 February 2008

Well, the Atascocita boys rallied together with their backs against the wall to complete back-to-back play-in wins today by defeating Port Arthur Memorial 41-39 at Baytown Lee.

With the win the Eagles pull down the final playoff spot in District 21-5A, and will take on District 22-5A winner La Porte in the bi-district round. No word on time or location, but I’ll try to get that as soon as possible.

Humble ISD has got to be feeling pretty good right now after completing the 21-5A playoff trifecta.

Hats off to Coach Castles and the whole Eagle basketball team for a job well done.

My oh my, Eagles still alive 15 February 2008

Atascocita came out fired up tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive with a huge 72-59 win over Baytown Sterling tonight. You can check out the full recap on the Atascocita Observer site (here).

The Eagles were led by some unsung heroes and two alley-oop dunks by freshman Everett Pleasant (fed by some brilliant passes that literally faked me out of my lens while I was shooting) only helped fuel Atascocita’s fire.

Seniors Mick Hoffman and Cristian Driver had huge impacts on the game that wont show up in the stats column. Hoffman came out and managed the game masterfully, and helped the Eagles snatch the momentum by serving up the first Pleasant alley-oop and draining a clutch three just before the half. Driver was all over the court on defense and came down with about every crucial defensive rebound in the third quarter to help thwart any chance of a Sterling comeback.

Kingwood takes number one seed after coin toss 14 February 2008

Just spoke to Humble boys basketball coach David Martinez and he informed me that the Humble boys will be heading into the playoffs as the District 21-5A two-seed.

After clinching a share of the District 21-5A title on Tuesday night with Kingwood(Kingwood defeated Atascocita the same night to do so), the two teams decided to settle playoff seeding with a coin toss.

Although losing the coin toss means Humble will face the District 22-5A three-seed rather than the number four, Martinez said that the two match-ups are basically the same to him and that the team is just happy to be in the playoffs and playing with a lot of confidence after the win over West Brook.

Looks like Atascocita will play Baytown Sterling at 7 p.m. tomorrow at North Shore High School to determine who will play Port Arthur Memorial for a playoff spot on Saturday. That game is scheduled at 2 p.m. @ Baytown Lee High School.

It’s a tough road to the playoffs for the Eagles, but talent wise they are more capable. The biggest thing for Atascocita will be getting some confidence and swagger back after three-straight heartbreaking loses.

Huge night for Humble ISD basketball teams 12 February 2008

Humble pulled off a dramatic 63-62 overtime win (full recap here) at home over the Bruins tonight, while Kingwood slipped out of Atascocita with a 57-52 win in the final seconds (full recap here). This means we have a tie for first place in District 21-5A between the two schools. Looks like the district has decided to determine the No. 1 seed by way of coin flip.

With the loss to Kingwood, it looked like Atascocita was going to miss the playoffs, but P.A. Memorial did them a favor tonight by losing to Baytown Sterling, leaving a three-way tie for fourth place. This madness will be decided by a three-way playoff Friday and Saturday, with a coin flip to decide seeding.

Things did not go as well for the Kingwood girls, as the Lady Mustangs ended up losing a heart breaker to Pasadena Dobie 40-37 in OT.
