I’m on a quick vacation at my home in New Jersey, but I’m making time to get in a few quick score updates, mostly from district action for our 3A and 4A teams.
Kingwood Park 68, Shepherd 37 – Quillian (KPrk) 20; Croy (KPrk) 14 – winning start in first district game for K-Park.
Tarkington 42, Splendora 29 – Usher (Splndr) 11 – disappointing start for Splendora.
Smiley 85, New Caney 57 – Boyd (NC) 24; Fernandez (NC) 12 – tough opponent, but I know New Caney expected to keep it closer.
Kingwood Park 49, Shepherd 29 – Brown (KPrk) 21 – that’s 3-0 for the Lady Panthers, but the toughest games lie ahead.
Tarkington 48, Splendora 45 – Jones (Splndr) 11; McClure (Splndr) 10 – tough one drops Ladycats to 1-2.
New Caney 72, Smiley 28 – Strother (NC) 20; Thomas (NC) 15 – Yikes. Almost makes up for the boys game.
Kingwood 54, Kountze 50 – Towers (Kwd) 15; Raught (Kwd) 13 – Tidy non-district win for the Lady Mustangs.

Both Spring and Westfield were in action today at the 68th Annual Houston ISD Jaycees Tournament after being sent to the consolation bracket due to first-round losses Thursday.
Spring began the day against Houston Furr but was unable to advance, dropping the game 37-33. The Lions will play their final match-up of the tourney tomorrow at Reagan High School (13th & Arlington, Houston TX) at 10:30 a.m. against Waco University.
Westfield began its day with a win over Houston Scarborough, advancing to the consolation quarterfinal to take on Houston Westside. In that game, the Mustangs ran away with a 92-67 win.
Westfield simply overwhelmed Westside in all phases of the game, storming to a 14-point halftime lead with a 27-point second quarter. Mike Brown and Mark Brooks led the way for Mustang scorers with 22 and 19 points, respectively. 18 of Brown’s points came in the first half alone (including a couple of spectacular dunks).
Westfield will play in the consolation semifinal Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Delmar Fieldhouse (2020 Mangum, Houston, TX) and can play for the consolation championship at 5 p.m. at Delmar with a win.
NC drops district opener against Huffman 18 December 2007Posted by Joe Musarra in Analysis, Game recaps, New Caney, Updates.

Despite jumping out to an early lead, the New Caney boys were unable to overcome Huffman Hargrave tonight after the Falcons emerged in the second quarter to break a 15-15 tie by hitting two quick 3-pointers. Huffman never looked back after taking the six-point lead, eventually taking a 55-48 win.
New Caney guards Danny Fernandez and Kevin Boyd helped the Eagles to to a hot start, as Fernandez kicked in eight first-quarter points, while Boyd added a 3-pointer.
Huffman’s stout defense took over during the second quarter, holding the Eagles to only five points and forcing several ill-advised shots.
New Caney fought back hard in the second half but was never able to close the gap. Huffman nursed a six-to-eight-point gap for the remainder of the game, fending off a flurry of Boyd 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Fernandez and Boyd lead all Eagle scorers with 19 and 13 points, respectively, with 12 of Boyd’s points coming off of threes.

Our heartfelt condolences to the familes and friends of Jim Eggers, the president of the Humble ISD school board, and Larry Johnson, the Humble High School principal. Both passed away Monday after unrelated health problems.
Johnson, the father of two former Humble football players – current Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson and Prairie View A&M defensive end Marquis Johnson – was a mainstay on the sideline at Humble sporting events. Both the Humble girls and boys basketball games scheduled for Monday night were cancelled.

The Atascocita girls won their first district game of the year Monday night, pulling away with a 16-4 advantage in the fourth quarter for a 53-37 win against an overmatched Baytown Lee squad. Nadia Taylor scored a season-high 27 points for the Lady Eagles, most of them from about two feet away. Kayla Bogs added 9 points and showed the best outside shooting of the day for Atascocita.
Other than Taylor, however, Atascocita was pretty unimpressive. The Lady Eagles have more depth inside than they did at the beginning of the season, but their passing and free-throw shooting were erratic. To be fair, however, head coach Tricia Gutierrez used all 11 players at her disposal with regular frequency, trying to get everybody on her deep squad some minutes. With a 9-6 record, Atascocita faces Katy Seven Lakes on Friday and will play in the Willis Tournament Dec. 27-29.
The real tests will come in January. Early-season losses to Baytown Sterling and Kingwood, two of its main playoff competitors, have put Atascocita in a hole. The buzzwords around the team, like last year, have been “team chemistry.” With it, the Lady Eagles are competitive; without it, they struggle on the floor. Of course, the games when they lack team chemistry often just happen to coincide with the tougher games. Will the Lady Eagles be able to toughen up in district play? We’ll find out in 2008, with an opening stretch of three games in seven nights against Beaumont West Brook, Port Arthur Memorial and Humble.
Joey went to see the Humble-P.A. Memorial girls game tonight, but the game appeared to be canceled. More on that later. The Kingwood girls, however, moved to 3-0 with a 45-39 win over Baytown Sterling.
On the boys side, Kingwood beat Clear Creek 59-49. Kingwood Park played Spring Dekaney in a JV game, and I’m not sure who won. In the same e-mail, I saw the score as Kingwood Park 51, Spring Dekaney 50 and Dekaney winning 60-51. I believe Dekaney did win, which is interesting to see. Sebastian Douglas and Darius Graves each had 15 points for the new Wildcats, while Jake Powell netted 21 and Kolby Chandler 11 for K-Park, which opens district play Friday night.

Both the Kingwood Park boys and girls teams fell at home tonight as the boys dropped a varsity match-up, 54-45, to Huffman Hargave and the Lady Panthers fell, 66-47, to The Woodlands.
In boys action, the Panther’s recovered from an awful first half after Huffman held them to only 12 points in the first half to make a game of it late. Down 37-20 entering the fourth quarter, Ryan Croy sparked a fourth quarter comeback, scoring 12 points in the final quarter alone. Croy led the Panthers in scoring with 24 points, while Kolby Chandler and Tyler Nichols added eight and six points respectively.
Over in the main gym, the Lady Panthers took on a very strong The Woodlands team that had a definite size advantage in the paint. Despite fighting hard all night long the Highlanders were too much for the Lady Panthers. Aly DioGuardi led the Lady Panthers with 19 points, raining in 5 three-pointers on the night. Larla Brown kicked in 13 for the Lady Panthers, while Kristi Murphy added eight points.

Remarkably, as I begin my second basketball season with the Observer, I had yet to see the Kingwood boys play until tonight. I probably wouldn’t have gone tonight, either, with an average district game on tap, but with most of our other teams out of town, I headed down Kingwood Drive to check them out, and I’m glad I did.
I saw a terrific performance from senior Jordan McGowen save a serious upset bid by Baytown Sterling, which led 35-34 after three quarters. Hunter Martin and Adam Brown each had 8 points, Nick James and Tevin Svihovec scored five apiece, and Rob Singletary had two points. Fore more details, you can read the online recap.
Friday night scoreboard
Kingwood 55, Baytown Sterling 46 – McGowen (Kwd) 27.
Humble 55, P.A. Memorial 48 – I’m pumped about this one.
Atascocita 59, Baytown Lee 33 – Great start for Humble ISD schools.
Huffman Hargrave 54, Kingwood Park 45.
Big Sandy 70, Splendora 59.
Westfield 63, Conroe Oak Ridge 53.
