On an up-and-down opening night, Humble pulled out a nailbiting 28-26 win over Aldine Eisenhower tonight on the strength of a last-minute goal-line stand. Here’s my online recap. I have some better pictures, but they need to be touched up a bit.

In other area action, Westfield beat Clear Brook 24-7 in underwhelming but emotional fashion (online recap), and Crosby beat Atascocita 35-21 (online recap).

Here are a few tidbits from the Humble game:

K-Park gets off to winning start 30 August 2007

Posted by Observer Sports in Game recaps, Kingwood Park, Updates.

With most of Houston focused on the Cy-Fair vs. Stratford game tonight, we headed up to Kingwood Park to check out the Panthers’ JV season opener against Austin Manvel – the first football game in K-Park high school history. With the Kingwood Park bleachers jammed and all the excitement of varsity football, the Panthers’ JV black squad put an old-fashioned whooping on Manvel to the tune of 58-0. More on that in a second, but the freshman black squad breezed past Manvel 36-6 in the opener, and the freshman green team shut out Barbers Hill 16-0 in its contest. The JV silver squad was leading Barbers Hill, last we heard.

Please check out the online recap of the game from our official HCN site and then keep reading for random thoughts from the game.

Former New Caney volleyball player Manieka Golden, now a sophomore at Galveston College, won the MVP award at the Harvester Volleyfest, hosted by Eastfield College, last weekend. The Whitecaps won the tournament title with a 30-25, 30-24, 18-30, 30-27 win over Clarendon College.

Golden was an honorable mention selection at outside hitter for the NJCAA all-Region XIV team last season as a freshman.

I am so stunned right now, that I’m just going to post this link and this link and pretty much leave it at that. Our hearts go out to the entire Spring community right now.

Westfield linebacker Herman Mitchell, who was 17 years old, was shot and killed yesterday on his way to the team bus for a scrimmage against Aldine, which was later canceled. Mitchell had given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Oklahoma.

The Atascocita volleyball team handled St. Pius X tonight in three straight games, winning 25-7, 25-18 and 25-21. The Eagles’ intensity was through the roof for game one, helping the Eagles dominate the Panthers on every level. The Eagles overcame a slow start in the second game and cruised to a big win. The 2-0 lead allowed Atascocita to work in its back-ups along with a few starters for game three. Senior outside hitter Katelyn Norris led the team with nine kills. The team impoved to 7-2 on the season with the win.

So I had it wrong. Kingwood was hosting Clear Creek at Kingwood Park High School tonight, with the KHS gym still under construction. At least the Mustangs brought along their net supports, their “Home of the Mustangs” sign and all the neon player signs. Oh, and their game, too. Kingwood won in four games, 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23. (more…)

On this final Friday before regular-season football starts, we invite you to check out some sneak peeks at our upcoming football previews by visiting hcnfootball.com. Stories are already up for Humble, Kingwood, Kingwood Park, New Caney and Splendora. Atascocita is on its way, including Jeremy Braden, Zach George and Daniel Tatman doing their best Varsity Blues impression. Spring stories will be up next week.

Tonight, there’s plenty of volleyball going on in the area. I plan on heading to the Clear Creek-Kingwood match at Kingwood, and Joe will be taking in the Katy Mayde Creek-Humble match. Atascocita is also at home, taking on St. Pius, Spring hosts Pearland and New Caney hosts Silsbee. Westfield plays at Marshall.

Let’s check out the volleyball action from Tuesday. Area teams were around .500 on the day, with Atascocita, Kingwood and Spring recording wins, and New Caney, Splendora and Humble dropping 3-0 decisions.

We got the most detailed information from Atascocita, which rolled to a 3-0 demolition of Class 3A Liberty, 25-7, 25-8, 25-11. Ole Miss-bound Katelyn Norris led the way with 14 kills. Atascocita is now 6-2 overall, 2-1 in full (non-tournament matches). The Eagles’ next match is Friday at home against St. Pius.

Kingwood beat Cy Falls 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-15, 25-19) on the road to remain unbeaten in full matches (3-0) in addition to a 3-1, second-place finish at the Cy-Fair ISD Tournament. Spring swept La Porte 3-0 in three close games.

On Friday, Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita, Spring and New Caney are ALL at home – not sure how Joey and I are going to manage that.

We weren’t able to get these Lake Houston Track athletes in the newspaper this week, but hopefully we’ll be able to print these pictures soon.

In the mean time, Sandra Tyson has generously posted these pictures publicly from Lake Houston Track athletes competing at the national, regional and district levels.

Athletes like the Tilletts – Tiffany (at right), Natasha, Christina and Tracy – and Devin Wallace, Asia Roberts, Benjamin Sprouse and Damian Bruce have done a great job representing the area at AAU meets all over the state and, in some cases, the country this year.
