What a day. Countless scores to tell you about, and still plenty more action to come tomorrow.

The biggest news came in Kingwood tonight, where Humble knocked off the Mustangs 35-32 despite playing the game without senior guard Dwayne Rogers. In his absence, backcourt mate Vincent Cavalier stepped up as the unquestioned star of the game. Cavalier scored 12 points, spent most of the game dribbling away the clock, hit the go-ahead free throw with 15.2 seconds remaining, and knocked away a steal that clinched the game soon after. He did all this despite missing two crucial minutes of the fourth quarter due to cramps. Quite a performance.

Humble opened up a 14-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to terrific defense, including two steals and two blocks from big man Terry Hines, who also hit a 3-pointer. Denying Kingwood entry passes to Jordan McGowen (14 points) was key for Humble all night. After the first quarter, Humble spent most of its energy killing the clock and trying to make Kingwood chase the ball. Darius Tubbs had a big game, joining McGowen and Cavalier as the only players to score in each quarter.

In the final quarter, Kingwood made its charge with Cavalier out of the game and tied the game after a clutch 3-pointer from Derek McLea and a pair of Tevin Svihovec free throws with 26.2 seconds left. But Svihovec fouled Cavalier before the ball was even inbounded, and Cavalier’s late heroics followed to lift Humble to a 5-0 district record. Quite a win, witnessed by a loud, involved crowd that packed the gym 20 minutes before tip-off.
