Humble swept Atascocita in both girls and boys basketball Tuesday, and the Kingwood Park girls improved to 5-0 in district play.
I saw the K-Park girls take on Coldspring first, and despite a slow first quarter, the Lady Panthers led 23-19 at the half. That was mainly thanks to 15 points from Larla Brown, and she finished with a ridiculous total of 28 on the night, even though she missed a few free throws. Kingwood Park had a bad shooting and rebounding night, it seemed, and Coldspring’s speed provided plenty of problems. But the Lady Panthers have good, aggressive defense and the district’s best player so far, so they’re 5-0. On Friday, K-Park is at Cleveland, which is also 5-0. That will be kind of a big deal.
I then shot over to see the Humble-Atascocita girls game at The Cita. Tied 6-6 after the first quarter, Humble exploded with 18 points in the second quarter to grab a 24-16 halftime lead. After Atascocita won the third quarter, 9-2, Humble head coach Blair Redmon – an assistant at Atascocita last year – held her troops together down the stretch. In the fourth quarter, Humble held Atascocita without a basket until there was 3:12 remaining and outscored Atascocita 11-4. Brenea White was among the defensive heroes with a tone-setting block on Nadia Taylor early in the fourth quarter. Tamara Williams netted nine fourth-quarter points to finish with 13, and Humble moved into second place with a 37-29 win.
I have to give Redmon a lot of credit for this. Unlike most girls teams, Humble has no dominant scorers, but the Lady Wildcats just beat Port Arthur Memorial and Atascocita with serious defense, allowing 28 and 29 points, respectively. That’s a lot of hard work without a lot of credit for some of the girls, but they’re getting it done. Humble is 4-2 in district play ahead of Friday night’s game against first-place, 6-0 Kingwood, which really doesn’t seem good enough or healthy enough to be 6-0.
Joe was at the boys game between Humble and Atascocita, and he says it was a barn-burner – here’s his recap.
