Atascocita water polo begins tournament play 11 October 2007

Just wanted to give all our blog readers out there a progress report on the Atascocita water polo teams as the girls team enters regional play this morning at Strake Jesuit. Keep an eye on the blog for updates from todays games.
The program fielded boys and girls teams in its first year of existence after fighting to get the team approved for quite a while.
Monday, Aug. 8 was the finale of both teams regular seasons, and the girls team was able to pull off a huge 9-5 victory over St. Agnes that forced a three-way tie for second in the district with St. Agnes and The Woodlands. The tie breaker went in favor of the Eagles, giving them the second seed in their district heading into postseason play.
The boys squad faced what one of the team parents called a far more physically and mentally mature team of veterans at Strake Jesuit and lost 12-1. Stephen Cogliandro scored the Eagles’ lone goal to prevent thte shut out. The boys team was unable to qualify for regionals, but the season can still be considered a success, especially considering that the team was young and lacked a little depth from my understanding.

I am so very proud of Atascocita Girls for their accomplishments! Go get em….at State! We fought long and hard for this…. and both boys and girls have stepped up and are being noticed! Remember anything can be accomplished with hard work and determination. Be proud!
Wow! What a great first season! Just think what the Waterpolo team could do if they had the support of their school and district! It seems that the club has won the hearts of the community. I walk into stores and hear people discussing it. It’s the classic Cinderella story, where the underdog succeeds despite the odds against them. Hopefully, the district will support their students next year so these Eagles can really fly! Coach Jennifer Dunn should also be recognized for stepping up to the plate and accepting the offer to coach this underdog team. Many coaches would never have done this. She has given so much of her free time to see that this season was successful while facing many difficulties like no pool to train in for most of the season (our district has 3 indoor pools), no equipment, not allowed to participate in pep rallies, etc, etc. Coach Dunn has worked with the school and district and honored all of their decisions while trying to train the Girls and Boys team. She has also tried to bridge the gap between swimming and waterpolo so that the students who want to do both sports can. Thank you Coach Dunn!! And Good Luck to the Lady Eagles at State! Your community is very proud of you! To Quote the AHS fight song: “With liberty and freedom, we’ll rise up to the sky. Our birth right is our tribute to soar as Eagles fly”.
